Why Check ATPV Ratings?
An arc thermal protective value, or ATPV, shows how much energy that equipment can be exposed to while continuing to protect the wearer. Ratings are given based on the fabric weight; for example, flame resistant coveralls must weigh at least 4.5 ounces per square yard in order to prevent the onset of a second-degree burn.
Fire resistant coveralls can be made from wool, rayon, silk or even cotton (or combinations of these materials) and are generally treated with flame-retardants to provide additional protection.
ATPV are measured in calories per cubic centimeter while being tested under the Arc Standard Test Method, or ATSM. During this process, one of two things happens: the fabric being tested either splits open or remains intact. That’s how testers determine the ATPV of a fabric – and that’s why it’s important to know what your flame resistant coveralls can actually resist.
