Mechanics Gloves

Mechanics Gloves vs. Bare Hands

There are many mechanics that choose not to wear gloves because they don’t want to lose dexterity or tactile sensitivity. However, this leaves hands vulnerable to heat and chemical burns, scrapes, and cuts. Mechanics Gloves are specifically designed to protect hands from the dangers of auto repair without compromising dexterity. Although no gloves can protect against everything, they can limit your exposure to hazards.

Employers should encourage mechanics to wear gloves for mechanics. OSHA regulation1910.132(a) states that employees shall be required to wear personal protective equipment such as gloves when working in areas with high risk of injury.

"The Complete Guide to Understanding and Selecting Coated Work Gloves for Hand Protection" offers five steps to selecting the correct gloves:

Step 1 - Evaluate the physical conditions hands will be exposed to and determine how much protection is needed.
Step 2 - Compare glove features such as material, length, cuff, and insulation to specific job tasks.
Step 3 - Choose the gloves that offer the appropriate level of protection, taking into account liquid-tight integrity and chemical resistance. WHEN IN DOUBT, ALWAYS OPT FOR MORE COVERAGE THAN NEEDED.
Step 4 - Select gloves based on employee evaluations of protection, comfort and functionality.
Step 5 - Periodically review glove choices to ensure that protection is consistent with needs.

Also remember to choose a mechanics glove that properly fits. Take the time to measure your hand to see which glove size best fits you.  Without a correct fitting glove, you run the risk of not being properly protected, which can lead to an unwanted hand injury.

These gloves are not just for mechanics, but good for everyone in any profession.
