Noise induced hearing loss
Noise is usually unwanted and different exposures to noise may result in different effects to a persons hearing depending on the noise level. Low level noise consists mainly of speech, but at higher levels of noise, physiological effects on your hearing as well as possible hearing loss and/or tinnitus can occur. Choosing the right earmuff is key in protecting your hearing.
Proper use of earmuffs
The use of earmuffs is detailed in the Occupational Noise Exposure Standard - 29 CFR 1910.95 and Section (i) of the standard states
Employers shall make hearing protectors available to all employees
exposed to an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 decibels or greater
at no cost to the employees
The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is the maximum number of decibels (db) the earmuff will reduce the sound level when worn. Section (j) states that the hearing protector should have a NRR sufficient to reduce the employee's exposure to a Time Weighted Average (TWA) of 90 dB (decibels) (or 85 dB for employees who have had a standard threshold shift). Appendix B of the same standard also provides some correction factors when using the NRR to asses the adequacy of the hearing protector.
Earmuffs are equipped with rigid cups with soft cushions which seal around the ear to block noise from entering. Earmuffs that have a higher NRR tend to be bulkier (with larger cups), than those with a lower NRR rating. The earmuff is typically made from plastic, which makes them ideal for work around electrical hazards or they are made from a combination of plastic and metal for added durability.
These earmuffs feature the same protection as standard earmuff but have other features such as an AM/FM radio, two-way radio reception or amplification of low sound levels built right in.
