Welding & Cornea Flash Burn

Having the proper eye protection when performing any form of welding is essential. Your eyes, in particular your corneas, can become permanently damaged by exposure to extreme doses of ultraviolet light (cornea flash burn), such as from a welder's arc. Cornea damage from a burn can cause changes in vision or loss of vision. Welding glasses protect your eyes from high U.V. rays produced when performing cutting operations, torch brazing, and torch soldering. This kind of eyewear does not have the same protection level as a helmet and should not be worn instead of a mask when arc welding.

OSHA Eye Protection Standards

In order to keep workers free from vision hazards on the job, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established various national standards. According to OSHA standard 1910.133(a)(1), it is the employer's responsibility to monitor workers' usage of the proper eyewear and head gear in the presence of certain dangers, including, but not limited to:

  • Airborne particles
  • Liquid chemicals
  • Molten metal
  • Chemical gases
  • Light Radiation

Benefits of Welding Glasses

Welding safety glasses come with IR (Infra-Red) filters that protect your eyes from U.V. rays and flash burns, while also offering a high level of impact-protection from flying objects associated with cutting, brazing, and torch soldering. The Pyramex Onix Plus series glasses feature a flip-up filter lens with a clear lens so you don't have to completely remove the glasses in-between welds. Welders' glasses are available in a variety of IR ratings to meet your needs. Don't sell your vision short, stay protected today!
