3M Versaflo™ PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) systems
3M Versaflo™ Respirator Systems are a comfortable, comprehensive approach to worker protection. Each system has three easy-to-select modules—headgear, breathing tubes and air sources—that can be combined into dozens of system configurations.
The comfort of this respirator system allows workers to focus on the job at hand rather than on the PPE (personal protective equipment) they are wearing.
3M Versaflo™ PAPR systems offer maximum flexibility
The easy-to-select modules is, in part, what allows Versaflo™ system users to experience maximum flexibility. The systems can easily move from one environment to another, or from one application to the next.
Many users of half and full facepiece respirators are taking a second look at powered and supplied air systems for reasons that go beyond mere compliance.
The safety benefits of 3M PAPR systems
Safety managers can configure modules and accessories to help protect users from a variety of combined hazards. Each system has three easy-to-select modules: an air delivery unit, a head top and a breathing tube. These easy-to-select modules can be combined into dozens of system configurations, and are the ultimate in flexibility for handling changing user environments, needs, and comfort preferences.
With 3M Versaflo™ Respirator Systems, pressure on the face, breathing resistance, and heat build-up are all greatly reduced when compared to non-powered and supplied air tight-fitting facepieces, creating all-day comfort for the user.
Versaflo™ respirators provide increased comfort
With 3M Versaflo™ Respirators, flowing air is provided to the user, which reduces the additional breathing effort required for half and full facepiece respirators. The flowing air increases user comfort at all times while it is being worn.
This feature is especially important during periods of strenuous labor.
Stream of air flow for improved comfort
3M Versaflo™ Headtops direct a comfortable stream of flowing air to where workers need it most: the head and face. The moving airflow can make hot environments more tolerable while greatly reducing visor fogging. And, when using the appropriate 3M Versaflo™ Supplied Air Regulator, the airflow can also be made cooler or warmer when working in hot or cold environments.
Versaflo™ systems are easy to use and durable
Easy-to-select. Easy-to-use. Easy-to-maintain.
For instance: most replacement parts can be installed by hand or with common tools (like a screwdriver) in a matter of moments.
This greatly reduces potential downtime, as well as the cost of replacement and installation. After all, being able to do it yourself is cheaper than paying someone else to do it.

3M Versaflo™ PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) systems FAQs
The PAPR systems are slowly emerging as the PPE system of choice. This is for two main reasons. Their level of comfort, and the safety they provide. Below are some of the more frequently asked questions about the 3M Versaflo™ PAPR systems.
What is the key difference between 3M cartridges and filters?
Filters use media for capturing particulates such as mists, fumes, and dusts. For the TR-800 and TR-600 PAPR systems use the TR-6710N filter. And the TR-300N+ use the TR-3712N filter.
Cartridges, on the other hand, help protect against certain vapors and gases. The cartridges for the TR-800 and the TR-600 systems are combined with particulate media to become a combination cartridge. There are currently 7 different variations of cartridges and filters offered by 3M for the TR-800 and the TR-600 series PAPR.
Do you need to be fit tested for a PAPR?
Whether or not you need to be fit tested for a PAPR depends on whether you have loose-fitting or tight-fitting equipment. For loose-fitting headgear on PAPRs, you don’t need to do a fit test. Whereas we reusable and tight-fitting disposable air-purifying options, do need to be tested.
The advantage of loose-fitting headgear is that they can save money and time. This is due to fit testing being a time-consuming process, and one that legally must be performed every year.
How often should battery and airflow be checked in regards to the PAPR system?
It is important that you carefully follow the instructions of the manufacturer regarding how often you need to check the PAPR’s battery status or air flow.
As a general rule, both the battery status and the air flow should be checked before the PAPR system is used. They should then be checked after 4 hours of use, and then every 2 hours after that.
What should be done during a respirator inspection?
There are 6 things that need to be checked during a PAPR inspection. Prior to a PAPR respirator being used, someone needs to ensure:
- There are no punctures, tears, or holes in the equipment.
- The battery is fully charged.
- The respirator is ready to use, and clean.
- The lens is not damaged or cracked in any way which might affect visibility or the performance of the respirator.
- The hoses that lead from the cartridge to the mask are in good condition.
- Proper cartridges are securely mounted in place. And that they are not at the end of their service life.
The 3M Versaflo™™ Powered Air Purifying Respirator system is engineered for customization and versatility. Which allows safety managers to build a system which works for their employees.
